MIXED LAYER [2 records]

Record 1 2004-01-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Layer adjacent to the Earth's surface which is mixed by convection or frictionally-induced turbulence or both.

CONT

Mixing depth. The thickness of the atmospheric layer near the surface in which air pollutants are dispersed by turbulence. At the top of the mixing layer a barrier to the dispersion is often formed by a temperature inversion.

OBS

mixed layer ... sometimes called convective mixed layer, convective boundary layer, or mixing layer in air-pollution meteorology. ... The terms mixed layer, convective mixed layer, and convective boundary layer commonly imply only the buoyantly stirred layer.

Key term(s)
  • atmospheric mixed layer

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oceanography
DEF

The uppermost layer of the ocean containing the surface waters.

CONT

Termocline [means a] layer of ocean water a few tens of meters thick that divides the mixed layer (a layer of relatively warm water just below the surface) from colder, deeper water.

CONT

mixed layer ... i.e. temperature and salinity are uniform due to mixing by the winds and surface cooling.

CONT

Mixed layer [means] a layer of surface water that is mixed by the wind and is thus isothermal.

OBS

isothermal: of equal temperature. Refers to horizontal or vertical expanses of the ocean containing water of equal temperature.

OBS

[This layer] is mixed by the wind and its thickness ranges from about 10 m, in upwelling regions, to 150 m, in regions where warm water converges.

Domaine(s)
  • Océanographie
CONT
