MIXING HEIGHT [2 records]

Record 1 2005-05-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Meteorological Forecasting, Data Measurement and Analysis
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Thickness h of the layer in which mixing occurs with a nearly adiabatic temperature gradient and only light winds.

CONT

Mixing Layer Depth ... The mixing layer is the atmospheric zone near the surface where pollutants disperse rapidly. The depth of this layer depends on the temperature and on the stability of the atmosphere at low levels. Lower values of mixing layer depth indicate that the pollutants will be mixed in a smaller volume of air.

OBS

The mixing height is the depth of the unstable air in the boundary layer and is used for forecasting smoke or pollutant trajectories.

OBS

h is approximately equal to kL, where k is the von Kármán constant and L, the Monin-Obukhov length.

Key term(s)
  • mixed layer depth
  • mixed-layer thickness
  • mixed layer top
  • mixing-layer height
  • mixing-layer depth
  • mixing-layer thickness

DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Mean distance of travel analogous to the mean free path of a molecule, characteristic of a particular motion and over which an eddy maintains its identity.

CONT

mixing length [is] a concept used in the parameterization of turbulent transport processes. According to this model, fluid masses called eddies, distinguishable from the ambient fluid, spring into existence in some undefined way and then, after moving unchanged over a certain path length, become indistinguishable from the surrounding fluid. This path length, over which the eddy mixes with the surrounding fluid, is called the mixing length. This model is analogous to the mean free path of a molecule or atom between collisions.

DEF
