Un onyxis est d'origine soit microbienne (staphylocoque, le plus souvent) – il s'agit d'un panaris –, soit mycosique (champignon microscopique), et l'on parle alors d'onychomycose. S'y associe souvent un périonyxis (inflammation du pourtour de l'ongle) formant un bourrelet cutané rouge qui laisse parfois sourdre des gouttes de pus.
