The pre-salt layer ... is the geological layers that were laid down before a salt layer accumulated above them. Some of the petroleum that was formed in the pre-salt layer has not leaked upward to the post-salt layers above. This is especially common off the coast of Africa and Brazil.

presal: La Fundación del Español Urgente (Fundéu BBVA), con el asesoramiento de la Real Academia Española, indica que "presal", todo junto y sin resalte ni mayúscula, es un neologismo adecuado para referirse a los yacimientos de petróleo que están debajo de una capa de sal. Este sustantivo se emplea para aludir a los propios yacimientos, a la capa geológica donde se encuentran y al petróleo que se extrae de ellos [...] Se trata, por tanto, de una voz bien formada que no necesita ser resaltada con comillas ni cursiva, que ha de escribirse con inicial minúscula, por tratarse de un sustantivo común, y sin espacio ni guion: presal, y no pre-sal o pre sal. La tendencia mayoritaria es, además, mantenerla como invariable en plural (yacimientos presal, capas presal), opción posible si la construcción se entiende como una estructura en aposición. En consecuencia, su empleo en los ejemplos anteriores es adecuado.
