The seventh province to enter the Canadian Confederation in 1873, and seventh in the order of precedence established according to the year of entry into Confederation. The province takes its name from the island on which it is located, "Prince Edward Island", historically "île Saint-Jean (Saint-Jean Island)".

OBS

The name of a province and its form, spelling and abbreviation are to be decided by the provincial toponymy authority, with the agreement of the Government of Canada. One uses "province of Prince Edward Island" for the geographical entity, "Province of Prince Edward Island" for the provincial administration, "Prince Edward Island" as the short form, and "P.E.I." as the abbreviation. Note the absence of hyphenation and the abbreviation without a space between the three elements abbreviated by their initial letter with a period, as the rule requires in English.

Approved by ISO, the Canada Post two-character symbol is PE (or CA-PE). This symbol is the same in all languages and must be used only in postal addresses and statistical charts where the identification of provinces and territories is restricted to two characters. A two-character provincial symbol must not be used instead of the abbreviation in a text or on a geographical map, a poster or a road sign.
