L'étude des minerais au microscope à réflexion est fondamentale en métallogénie, théorique ou appliquée. Elle a conduit à supprimer un grand nombre de soi-disant espèces minérales, qui étaient en réalité des agrégats très fins de plusieurs minéraux. La méthode du microscope à réflexion permet de se rendre compte si certains minéraux qui présentent une composition chimique variable, comme la galène argentifère par exemple, comportent une association avec d'autres minéraux ou bien une solution solide de substances particulières conservant l'homogénéité cristalline du minéral.
