Horizontal roof openings are reminiscent of primitive roof holes used by our ancestors to let the light in and the smoke out. Flat skylights have both drainage and dirt-accumulation problems. Curved or slanted skylights slightly improve these negative conditions.

Les fenêtres pour toits en pente constituent une variante améliorée du châssis de toit; elles permettent l'éclairage des combles sans recourir à un dispositif spécial pour la mise en place d'une fenêtre classique (...) Elles sont constituées par un ouvrant vitré de grandes dimensions, placé dans le plan de la toiture et s'ouvrant à l'instar d'un châssis basculant, mais "en visière"; cela permet le nettoyage, empêche la pluie de pénétrer et assure la ventilation.
