English

Subject field(s)
  • Weed Science
  • Crop Protection
DEF

That characteristic, especially in many herbicides, whereby certain undesirable species are killed while others such as crop plants or beneficial insects are harmed little.

CONT

... Dinoseb (2-sec-butyl-4,6-dinitrophenol) exhibits contact toxicity to plant foliage, but it exhibits selectivity when applied before emergence; it thus allows satisfactory emergence of some important crop plants, such as peanuts, but kills the germinating seedlings of many annual weeds.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Diagnostic Procedures (Medicine)
DEF

A characteristic of the performance of a diagnostic test, defined as the proportion of persons with a negative test result among persons who do not have the disease; it is calculated as follows: true negatives ÷ (true negatives + false positives).

CONT

STIs [sexually transmitted infections] may be diagnosed in the laboratory using (a) culture, (b) microscopy, (c) antigen detection, (d) nucleic acid detection, (e) serology and (f) surrogate markers. The sensitivity and specificity of these different approaches vary according to specimen type and organism assayed. ... NAATS [nucleic acid amplification tests] are the most sensitive methods, and culture the most specific.

specificity: term and definition standardized by the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Glossary English Editorial Board and the Translation Bureau.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Méthodes diagnostiques (Médecine)
DEF
