STABLE PLATFORM [2 records]

Record 1 2008-11-06

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plate Tectonics
DEF

The part of a terrestrial continent that is covered with flat-lying or gently tilted strata and underlain by a complex of igneous and metamorphic rocks.

OBS

The stable platform has not been extensively affected by crustal deformation.

OBS

stable platform: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Tectonique des plaques
CONT

Record 2 2006-03-06

English

Subject field(s)
  • Flight Instruments and Equipment (Aeroindustry)
  • Aircraft Piloting and Navigation
  • Navigation Instruments
DEF

A platform that is controlled in inertial space by gyroscopic means.

CONT

IRS. Inertial reference system. Navigation. Equipment that determines aircraft position by sensing aircraft accelerations with a gyrostabilized platform and provides the information to the RNAV [Area navigation] equipment or FMS [flight management system].

CONT

Inertial Navigation System (INS) ... Velocity and distance are computed from sensed acceleration. Two accelerometers, gyro stabilized, are mounted in a gimbal assembly commonly called the platform ... The gyro stabilized platform on which the two accelerometers are mounted is kept level with respect to the earth (rather than fixed in space) by a compensating mechanism that allows for the fact that the earth is rotating and that it is round.

Key term(s)
  • gyro-stabilized platform

French

Domaine(s)
  • Instruments et équipement de bord (Constructions aéronautiques)
  • Pilotage et navigation aérienne
  • Instruments de navigation
DEF

Key term(s)
  • plateforme stabilisée gyroscopiquement
  • plateforme stabilisée par gyroscopes
  • plateforme gyrostabilisée
  • plate-forme stabilisée par gyroscopes
  • plateforme gyrostabilisée
