Pour la perforation en gros diamètre, l'emploi de couronnes pleines entraîne une grande consommation de diamants. Aussi a-t-on récemment mis au point l'outil "straight-hole" comprenant une couronne à diamant ordinaire et un trépan à molettes disposé à son intérieur juste au-dessus (...) La carotte est ainsi détruite au fur et à mesure de sa formation. Cet outil donne de très bons rendements dans les roches tendres et dans les formations à pendages redressés, mais il vaut mieux ne pas l'utiliser pour la perforation des horizons durs et abrasifs.
