Il existe plusieurs stratégies structurales (structural systems) applicables à l'infrastructure (substructure) et à la superstructure (superstructure), c'est-à-dire les parties du bâtiment situées au-dessous ou au-dessus du niveau du sol respectivement; toutefois on distingue deux grandes stratégies structurales relatives à l'enveloppe verticale : le mur porteur (bearing wall) et le mur rideau (curtain wall).
