In English there is a definite nuance between the terms "survivor" and "victim," as evidenced in the following sentence: "Children in Crisis: The Survivors. Nine successful men and women tell how they managed to overcome often horrendous childhoods." In French texts, however, this distinction is often unstated: both English terms are translated by "victime."

En français, le terme «victime» suggère une personne qui pâtit des agissements d'autrui tandis que le terme «survivante» décrit une personne qui s'en sort. «Victime» est utilisé dans un deuxième sens, cependant, pour désigner une personne qui a subi un acte terminé; dans ce sens, victime est l'équivalent de «survivor». Le masculin de «survivante» est «survivant».
