Formées par la dilatation permanente des veines superficielles des membres inférieurs, associée à une dilatation de leur paroi, les varices sont très fréquentes et souvent à l'origine de complications invalidantes, à l'instar de l'ulcère de jambe. Au terme de varices, on préfère aujourd'hui l'expression «maladie variqueuse», qui désigne un ensemble de troubles veineux : varicosités, varices, thromboses, troubles cutanés.
