La mescaline, la psylocybine, le LSD [diéthylamide de l'acide lysergique] sont des hallucinogènes. Ils entraînent une tolérance pharmacologique croisée entre eux, mais n'engendrent pas de dépendance physique. Les sujets prenant des hallucinogènes cherchent à faire une expérience psychédélique. Les perturbations sensorielles se divisent en : hyperesthésies (les couleurs paraissent plus vives, les tons prennent un relief éclatant); synesthésies (enchaînement d'un domaine sensoriel à un autre entraînant p. ex. la perception simultanée de sons et de couleurs); illusions visuelles et auditives (espaces et formes démesurément agrandis ou rapetissés, distortions des sons): hallucinations; désorientation temporospatiale. La mescaline donnée à des volontaires sains produit une psychose proche de la schizophrénie. Les changements du comportement au cours de l'intoxication sont dus à une hyperactivité cérébrale produite par une action stimulante sur la dopamine et la sérotonine. Les symptômes sont ceux de l'hyperstimulation sympathique : augmentation de la pression artérielle, de la fréquence cardiaque et hyperthermie.
