Le principe de la zone flottante en microgravité est relativement simple. Prenons par exemple un bâtonnet de beurre dont on fait fondre une des extrémités au moyen d’un briquet. Sur Terre, évidemment, le beurre se met à fondre et tombe goutte à goutte. En impesanteur cependant, le beurre fondu forme une sphère et demeure en suspension dans l'air. On appelle cette sphère une «zone flottante». Si l'on déplace le bâtonnet de beurre très lentement au-dessus de la flamme pour éventuellement le faire fondre au complet, la zone flottante initiale commence à se solidifier en s’éloignant de la source de chaleur.
