longueur de mélange [3 records]

Record 1 2004-01-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Mean distance of travel analogous to the mean free path of a molecule, characteristic of a particular motion and over which an eddy maintains its identity.

CONT

mixing length [is] a concept used in the parameterization of turbulent transport processes. According to this model, fluid masses called eddies, distinguishable from the ambient fluid, spring into existence in some undefined way and then, after moving unchanged over a certain path length, become indistinguishable from the surrounding fluid. This path length, over which the eddy mixes with the surrounding fluid, is called the mixing length. This model is analogous to the mean free path of a molecule or atom between collisions.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF

Record 3 2004-01-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
  • Aerodynamics and Theory of Gases
DEF

An average distance of air parcel turbulent movement toward a reference height, where the average is a root-mean-square distance.

OBS

It is also known as Prandtl's mixing length, l, after Ludwig Prandtl who devised it in 1925 to explain turbulent fluxes such as the Reynolds stress.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
  • Théorie des gaz et aérodynamique
CONT
