Subject field(s)
  • Site Development

DEF

(grade) A degree of inclination, or a rate of ascent or descent, with respect to the horizontal, of a road, railroad, embankment, conduit, or other engineering structure; it is expressed as a ratio (vertical to horizontal), a fraction (such as m/km or ft/mi), or a percentage (of horizontal distance).

DEF

(gradient) The degree of slope of a pipe invert or road or land surface. Often expressed as a ratio (3:1, 6:1) in feet or meters, or as a percentage (2%, 30%). The gradient is a measurement of the slope height as related to its base.

CONT

Slopes or gradients are expressed as a ratio of the length of rise to the length of run; for example, 1:10 is the same as 10 per cent and 1:50 is the same as 2 per cent.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Aménagement du terrain
  • Architecture paysagère
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geomorphology and Geomorphogeny
DEF

The steepness of a hill, measured in per cent and equal to feet of vertical rise per hundred feet of horizontal distance.

CONT

Gravity Forces (Fsl) pull the rider and bike down the slope (GradHill). The slope of a hill is defined here as rise divided by horizontal run. This is expressed as a decimal number.

CONT

... I'm doing some training that requires me to climb some hills at 3%, 5% and 7%. O.K., so we all know how to calculate the grade of a hill ...

CONT

Tracks should have a gradient generally between 3 - 10 degrees. Short sections may have a gradient between 10 - 15 degrees if the soil type allows it and if erosion control devices are effective and skidding can be avoided.

OBS

The term "gradient" may also be used to mean the actual hill or slope.

PHR

Grade of a hill; slope of a hill.

Record 9 2006-06-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geomorphology and Geomorphogeny
CONT

For some the experience of riding up a hill will be one of elation but for most, the pain of climbing has been enough to see the bike sent to the darkest recesses of the shed or garage and the reintroduction of tiddly-winks to the daily activities.

CONT

You will get buckets of water thrown over you, you will get balloons from every corner thrown at you and they also have these huge bicycle pump looking things that throw a spout of water several meters. If you are cycling up a steep gradient you might be said to be a captive audience to them. They have no mercy.

CONT

You turn in the dirt road to your right and after a short slope you find a rocky climb, with fairly wide hairpin bends offering a beautiful view of the surrounding valleys. Just before the church of Cigno the tarmac road starts again and after cycling through this small village you get to a crossroads (the highest point this route) where you turn left along a beautiful slope leading to Civorio.

OBS

The term "gradient" may also be used to mean the "grade of a hill", in which case it is usually expressed as a percentage. "Hill" and "slope" are also polysemic.

Subject field(s)
  • Roofs (Building Elements)
DEF

Incline of a roof expressed as a ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run. For example, a roof that rises at the rate of 4 in. for each 12 in. of run is designated as having a 4 in. 12 slope.

CONT

The slope of a roof is generally referred to as the pitch and is expressed as the ratio of the rise of the roof to the horizontal span.

OBS

Slope indicates the incline of a roof as a ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run .... Slope and pitch are often incorrectly used synonymously when referring to the incline of a sloped roof. Pitch indicates the incline of a roof as a ratio of the vertical rise to twice the horizontal run.

OBS

The distinction between "slope" and "pitch" traced in "Construction: Principles, Materials, and Methods," by Harold B. Olin, et al (source OLICO) can also be found in "Construction Glossary: an encyclopedic reference and manual," by J. Stewart Stein (source SCONS, p 275), but nowhere else.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Toitures (Éléments du bâtiment)
DEF
