Minéral du système monoclinique constitué de borosilicate hydraté de calcium, se présentant en cristaux prismatiques d'aspect lenticulaire, incolores ou blancs, parfois jaunes ou verts.

La datolite, monoclinique, est faite de tétraèdres [...] qui alternent pour constituer des couronnes à 4 ou 8 tétraèdres. [...] C'est un minéral qui accompagne les zéolites, la prehnite et la calcite dans les géodes des roches volcaniques (basaltes, brèches) et qui, aussi, se forme dans les zones de contact entre granites et roches calcaires.
