La valeur de cet indice de tenue au cheminement correspond à la tension en volts, qui est mesurée, après avoir versé sur la surface d'une éprouvette, entre deux électrodes, 50 gouttes d'une solution à 0,1 % de chlorure d'ammonium. Les éprouvettes ont une épaisseur de 3 mm et l'on estime que la valeur obtenue est représentative pour toutes les épaisseurs.
