"Bill of lading" (document non négociable) peut se traduire par lettre de transport et, selon le mode de transport, par des désignations spécifiques : "lettre de voiture ferroviaire" (pour le transport ferroviaire), "lettre de transport maritime" (pour le transport maritime), "lettre de voiture" (pour le transport routier et le transport fluvial). Par contre, dans les domaines des transports maritime et fluvial, il existe un document qui porte la mention "négociable". Ce document porte le nom de "connaissement" (pour le transport maritime), et de "connaissement fluvial" (pour le transport fluvial). Au Canada, le terme "connaissement" est employé à tort à la place de "lettre de voiture".
