Le singhalais et le tamoul sont les deux langues officielles du Sri Lanka, qui compte trois langues nationales (singhalais, tamoul et anglais). Il convient de distinguer le singlish de l'anglais sri lankais, qui demeure l'anglais standard utilisé dans la rédaction des lois, les journaux, etc., alors que le singlish est une langue mixte parlée par les masses peu instruites et qui est considéré comme du «mauvais anglais».
