In a broad sense, the combination of two or more corporations by any of several devices.

CONT

Mergers ... one entity winds up its affairs and transfers its asset to another. Once dissolution has taken place, the courts rarely recognize the continuing existence of the old body.

OBS

"Amalgamation" also has another meaning which is synonymous with "consolidation".

Les paires «merger/amalgamation» et «consolidation/amalgamation» sont traduites toutes les deux par «fusion», terme ayant un sens générique et spécifique. Lorsque «merger» s'emploie de façon générique et «amalgamation» de façon spécifique dans un même texte, le premier pourrait se traduire par un mot descriptif, tel que «unification» (utilisé dans la Loi de l'impôt sur le revenu) et le deuxième par «fusion» (sens spécifique); ou encore, «merger» pourrait se rendre par «fusion» (sens générique) et «amalgamation» par une périphrase, telle que «fusion par création d'une société nouvelle».

De manera común, la fusión es un caso especial de combinación, donde las compañías se desean fusionar y hacerlo en términos iguales dentro de lo posible, a diferencia de una adquisición, la cual ocurre contra los deseos de una compañía. Sin embargo, algunas veces se emplean como sinónimos fusión, adquisición, amalgamación y absorción. Cuando dos empresas que están en el mismo negocio, es decir, son competidoras, se fusionan, esto se conoce como integración horizontal o lateral. Cuando se fusionan dos empresas que son proveedoras o consumidoras una de la otra, se denomina integración vertical.
