About this glossary

The Government of Canada's royal assent of Bill C-16 in June 2017 has allowed for the inclusion of the concepts of "gender identity" and "gender expression" in the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code. These amendments reflect the Canadian government's commitment to protecting the rights of trans and gender-diverse people.

In 2017, the first version of the Gender and Sexual Diversity Glossary was published online. The development of this glossary was part of a widespread movement for the recognition of gender and sexual diversity. It was first updated in 2019 as a result of the evolving vocabulary in the field, the strong interest in the glossary and the comments received in response to the first version. In 2023, the glossary was updated again to reflect the changing ways of thinking and the collaborative work done on the Guide on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Terminology. This third version of the glossary covers 155 concepts.

The Gender and Sexual Diversity Glossary was developed in collaboration with a number of individuals, departments and organizations that have a particular interest in the subject, as well as language experts.

Update: December 2023

Notes

The symbol "+" represents people who identify as being part of various sexual and gender communities and use additional terminologies.

Other letters or symbols are sometimes added to or subtracted from the abbreviation to reflect different realities of sexual and gender diversity, for example, "A" for "asexual." Certain words can be abbreviated differently; for example, "Two-Spirit" can be abbreviated as "2" or "2S."

When there are two "Q"s in the abbreviation, the second "Q" stands for "questioning."

The terms "gay person" and "gay" are commonly used to refer specifically to gay men, but may also be used to refer to people of other genders.

The noun "homosexual" is now often regarded as offensive, since it can evoke negative stereotypes and outdated clinical understandings of homosexuality as a mental disorder.

gender [1]
Terminological data for gender [1]
Types of data English French
Preferred designations
  • gender [1] (noun)
  • genre (masculine noun)
Definitions The behavioural, cultural and psychological traits associated with an array of gender identities, including woman or man, in a given society.
Notes

Gender influences how people perceive themselves and others. It refers not only to physical, psychological, behavioural and other differences, but also to the meanings and values society associates with male and female, that is, the idea that people have specific social roles and skills because of their sex.

While sex refers to a set of anatomical and physiological characteristics, gender refers to a social construct.

Notes

Gender-affirming surgeries consist of a range of surgical procedures that can be performed as part of a transition. Their purpose is to modify a person's anatomical features to better match their gender.

The terms "sex reassignment surgery" and "sex change surgery" are sometimes considered outdated, especially when they are associated with the pathologization of transgender experiences.

The abbreviation "GBA+" was replaced by "GBA Plus" in June 2021.

queer [2]

Definitions Referring to a person whose sexual orientation or gender differs from the normative binary vision of gender and sexuality.
Notes This term may still be considered controversial because it was historically used in a derogatory manner. However, it is also used by some 2SLGBTQI+ activists as a powerful symbol of assertiveness and freedom, partly because it resists categorization and can be used as an umbrella term to refer to various gender identities or sexual orientations.

Notes

Sex is usually categorized as female or male, but there is variation in the biological attributes that comprise sex and how those attributes appear. Often a person with these variations is characterized or self-identifies as intersex.

For some people, sex is not static and can change in the course of a person's life.

While sex refers to a set of anatomical and physiological characteristics, gender refers to a social construct.
