In the most common type of high temperature reactor(HTR) fuel, tiny particles of nuclear fuel are coated with three or four layers of coatings which are impenetrable to fission products up to a temperature of 2000 celsius. About 20, 000 particles, bonded with graphite are massed together to form a spherical fuel element with a diameter of about 6 centimeters. The pebbles are ... designed to passively limit the amount of heat unleashed by the nuclear fission reactions that drive the reactor. The fissionable material is divided into groups of 100 million billion uranium-235 atoms scattered within a 0.5 mm sphere of uranium dioxide. That core is coated with four containment layers. ... Some 15,000 carbon-coated uranium dioxide kernels, looking like nuclear poppy seeds, are embedded in a tennis ball-size graphite and resin matrix. Graphite acts to slow the fission neutrons and so acts as an embedded moderator. The matrix is then encased in a 5 mm pure carbon shell, sintered, annealed, and machined to a uniform diameter of 6 cm. 2, record 7, English, - fuel%20pebble

The nanomotor has a positioning stroke up to some centimeters while operating with atomic resolution and thus builds a bridge over eight orders of magnitude. The nanomotor is a piezo driven linear motor consisting of a cylindrical housing and a slider with a free axial hole inside. It utilizes a piezo tube for fine positioning and a pulse wave produced by the same piezo tube for coarse movements. Every point of its stroke can be reached with a speed of up to 5 mm/s. In its free axial hole the nanomotor can transport a tip, a hose, an electrode, a hypodermic needle, a glass fiber or even a microgripper. The nanomotor is available in three different versions. The "small" nanomotor is half the size of a match stick. It can lift six times of its own mass. The dynamic force of this nanomotor is so high, that even imprints in diamond surfaces can be produced. Special versions of the nanomotor can operate in ultra high vacuum, in liquid helium, even under water or as non-magnetic drives. 3, record 14, English, - nanomotor

... "failure" [is] when the snow begins to progressively loose strength. [Snow can fail without fracturing. Fracture is when a snow layer] snaps right off... Failure is thought, by some, to precede fracture--perhaps over the course of minutes to hours. But others believe that fracture doesn’t always require a preceding failure. There's a lot of evidence that they can both occur at the same time. When we add a rapid change to the snowpack, just like silly putty, it introduces stored elastic energy into the system making it capable of propagating a fracture.... Failure occurs slowly at perhaps centimeters per hour and fracture occurs catastrophically and has been measured at around 20 meters per second. 2, record 17, English, - fracture

The spring tree is first shaped out of thin plywood. Fiberglass material(the fiberglass looks like a white screen mesh) is then stretched over this plywood, and liquid resin is hand-brushed or prayed on top, resulting in a very strong and durable product. Two "springs" made of lightweight steel strips are then inserted under the tree running from front to the rear along the widest part of the seat, and set about two inches(five centimeters) from the outside. The springs provide greater comfort and more flexibility to the rider by allowing the pressure exerted through the seat bones to be transmitted to the horse. 3, record 26, English, - spring%20tree%20of%20a%20saddle

A specialized machine called a ladder trencher, or ditcher, is effective for opening trenches for utility lines, telephone cables, drainage and sewer lines, and the like. It consists of two main components : a crawler, or rubber-tired carrier, and a digging mechanism. Depending on the soil condition and the depth of the trench to be excavated, the trencher can move at a speed of up to 2 miles(3. 2 kilometers) per hour. It has a long boom, and an endless chain rotates along the boom. Buckets or clamshells attached to this chain dig at the bottom of the trench, bring up excavated material, and unload it onto a conveyer while the machine moves slowly along. The width of the excavated trench ranges between 18 and 60 inches(46 and 152 centimeters). Ladder trencher can be used for digging depths of up to 20 feet(6 meters). 2, record 40, English, - ladder%20ditcher

Cloud-to-ground [discharge. ]... Once a sufficiently high voltage difference exists for electrical breakdown to begin in the cloud, a streamer of electrons develops. This, in turn, can become a "stepped leader, "which approaches the earth in a series of rapid steps... The stepped leader produces an ionized channel(molecules in its path are stripped of electrons) and tends to follow a downward branching path. As soon as one of the branches is within five to 50 meters of the surface, another streamer advances upward to meet it along the path of least resistance(often through tall and pointed objects). Now an ionized path a few centimeters in diameter connects earth with cloud. Next, the "return stroke, "which carries a surge of current, travels up the ionized channel, lighting up the paths taken by the stepped leader. 4, record 56, English, - channel

Superfluid Helium What Is It? As the temperature of helium gas is lowered to approximately 5. 2°K, a phase transition to ordinary liquid helium(He I) takes place. The latter is unremarkable and its behavior is identical to any other liquid. As temperature is lowered further(at moderate pressures) helium does not solidify. Rather, it undergoes a phase change to a second liquid phase He II at temperature of about 2. 17°K.... the He II phase persists all the way to absolute zero.... The He II phase is referred to as superfluid helium because of its remarkable properties, including the ability to flow through microscopic passages [holes as small as 10-7 centimeters in diameter] with no apparent friction; the quantization of vortices; and the ability to support four wave modes : first sound which is analogous to sound in ordinary gases and liquids, second sound which carries temperature and entropy perturbations with virtually no pressure variations, third sound which are waves on thin films, and fourth sound which are acoustic-like waves in the "superfluid" component of He II. 5, record 60, English, - helium%20II

There, the Space Shuttle stops again and waits for approximately 5 minutes. There are two variations... [of the maglev]... The so-called repulsion-mode electrodynamic system, proposed by Powell and Danby... [and] the attraction-mode electromagnetic system [developed in Germany]. [In this system] conventional(nonsuperconducting) iron-core electromagnets carried by the vehicle are attracted upward toward ferromagnetic components attached to the underside of the guideway structure. This type of magnetic suspension is inherently unstable and needs precise control to maintain a clearance of about l. 5 centimeters between the vehicle's magnets and the guideway. One advantage, however, is that the vehicle remains levitated even when motionless and thus could be used for urban and commuter transit as well as for longer, high-speed routes. 2, record 81, English, - attraction%2Dmode%20electromagnetic%20maglev

There are two variations... [of the maglev] : the so-called repulsion-mode electrodynamic system... uses superconductive magnets on board the vehicle to induce currents in conductive coils in the guideway. This interaction levitates the vehicle about 15 centimeters, as though it were a low-flying, guideway-based aircraft. Indeed, the Japanese vehicle achieves magnetic liftoff at about 100 kilometers per hour; at lower speeds, it rolls on wheels. 2, record 82, English, - repulsive%2Dmode%20electrodynamic%20maglev

2, record 82, French, - maglev%20%C3%A9lectrodynamique%20%C3%A0%20mode%20r%C3%A9pulsif

Precision farming is the wave of the future. Precision farming is any technological development which will help farmers gain a production advantage. It can range from a yield monitor on a combine, to idientifying WIND-BLOWN KNOLLS which can be enhanced with manure applications, to complex satellites which can mark precise locations in a field within centimeters. Precision farming is basically assessing the variability of the soil and then learning to manage the variability to optimize productivity. 1, record 83, English, - wind%2Dblown%20knoll

1, record 99, French, - Podischnus%20agenor

Spectrum analyzer. A device which sweeps over a portion of the radio-frequency spectrum, responds to signals whose frequencies lie within the swept band, and displays them in relative magnitude and frequency on a cathode-ray-tube screen. In essence, it is a superheterodyne receiver having a local oscillator whose frequency is varied cyclically, usually at the power-line frequency. 3, record 100, English, - microwave%20signal%20spectrum%20analyzer
