Iniciar significa "comenzar o empezar algo" mientras que inicializar (calco del inglés "initialize") es un término empleado en informática cuyo significado es "preparar o configurar los elementos técnicos de un programa para trabajar con él" [...], se inicia un programa cuando se comienza sin hacer ningún cambio [...] y se inicializa un programa cuando hay una configuración previa [...]; inicialar [...] significa "firmar con las iniciales del nombre y del apellido" y que también se emplea con el sentido de "firmar provisionalmente [un documento], como paso previo a la firma definitiva".
