Drill steel. In rock drilling, the round or hexagonal steel bar (not less than 18 mm across the flats) which enters the hole in the rock. It has a drill bit forged or screwed on to its end.

The drill bit is a short section screwed onto shaft at varying lengths up to 48 inches and may be tipped with very hard material.

Su boca puede tener filo simple o doble, o bien en forma de corona, de cruz o de zeta.

Los términos "barreno" y "taladro" son polisémicos dentro del mismo campo. "Barreno" puede significar tanto el instrumento de filo cortante como el agujero que se taladra con él. "Taladro", a su vez, puede hacer referencia al instrumento filoso, al aparato en el que se coloca dicho instrumento y al agujero que deja.
