In 1965, a high-pressure sodium lamp was introduced in the United States. It utilizes an amalgam of sodium and mercury inside an arc tube surrounded by an evacuated glass jacket. Lampes à vapeur de sodium à haute pression. Ces lampes utilisent un tube d'alumine frittée, inattaquable par le sodium, dont le pouvoir de transmission est de 90% dans le domaine visible; la décharge s'effectue sous une pression de l'ordre de 200 tours, ce qui améliore l'efficacité et donne un bon rendu des couleurs; ces tubes ne présentent aucun noircissement après 10 000 heures de fonctionnement. La présence de mercure permet d'atteindre un facteur d'efficacité élevé avec des intensités de courant comprises entre 2,5 et 5A.
