Many palaeognaths are quite large birds, relying on running speed and vicious kicking to defend themselves... But other paleognaths, like the three spacies of kiwi(Apteryx) living on New Zealand, are small, shy, retiring creatures. Palaeognath birds are grouped together on the basis of their distinctive palate morphology, from which they receive their name("old jaw"). Most of the birds classified in the Palaeognathae are flightless.

In English scientific usage, all elements of names of bird species require capital letters except for hyphenated adjectives where the second word is not capitalized, for example, Black-crowned Night Heron.

DEF

A tasting term for a dry, mouth-puckering feeling on the palate.

CONT

This mouth-puckering feeling is caused by excess tannin or acidity, usually encountered in young red wines.

OBS

The degree of astringency varies considerably according not only to the quantity of the tannin, but to its quality. Alcohol and sweetness modify and soften the effect of astringency, delaying its perception on the palate. High acidity accentuates its effect and accelerates its perception as astringency on the palate.

OBS

It seems that in English the noun astringency is used more often than the adjective astringent, but the latter is also correct.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Industrie vinicole
DEF

  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Horse Husbandry
CONT

Crib-biting and wind-sucking are different varieties of the same vice, which are learned chiefly by young horses. In each case the horse swallows air. A ’crib-biter’ effects this by grasping the edge of the manger or some other convenient fixture with the incisor teeth; it then raises the floor of the mouth; the soft palate is forced open; a swallowing movement occurs; and a gulp of air is passed down the gullet into the stomach. A ’wind-sucker’ achieves the same end, but it does not require a resting-place for the teeth.... Some horses which have been crib-biters learn to wind-suck when remedial measures are taken, and there are some wind-suckers which learn to crib-bite.

CONT

No harm is known to have occurred to livestock who crib CCA treated wood.

French

Domaine(s)

CONT

A second group of marine crocodilians evolved during the Lower Jurassic, probably from teleosaurid ancestors. This was the family of metriorhynchids. They are the most specialized of all the members of crocodilian order, being profoundly modified for an aquatic life. Their kinship to the teleosaurids is evident from their double-concave vertebrae, the structure of their palate and other features of their cranial anatomy. Beyond this, however, the skull is streamlined, the limbs are transformed into paddles and the end of the spine is bent sharply down.
