En statistique agricole, expression qui a été employée pour désigner la dimension des exploitations. La S.A.U. correspondait à la superficie totale moins les bois et le territoire non agricole, c'est-à-dire aux terres labourables, à la surface toujours en herbe (S.T.H.), aux cultures permanentes (vignes, vergers, etc.) et spéciales (maraîchères, etc.), à la superficie des cours et des bâtiments de l'exploitation ainsi qu'à celle des landes non productives, qui, dans certaines zones pauvres ou désertées, représentent parfois des étendues importantes.

superficie agricole utile : Pour mieux cerner les superficies contribuant effectivement à la production, on a, à partir de 1963, remplacé cette expression par celle de superficie agricole utilisée, qui désigne la superficie agricole utile moins la superficie des landes improductives et celle des cours et des bâtiments.
