Gravel is introduced around the screen or intake section of the well to increase the specific capacity and to prevent extremely fine material from flowing into the well. Depending on detail of construction, such wells are called gravel well, gravel-envelope well, gravel-filled well, gravel-packed well. 2, record 11, English, - gravel%2Dpacked%20well

Natural gas is most commonly stored under pressure in three different types of underground facilities. The most common type of storage facility is depleted oil and natural gas fields. Converting a field from production to storage has the advantage of existing infrastructure such as wells, gathering systems, and pipeline connections. The second most common type of natural gas storage facility is natural aquifers, which are frequently used in the Midwest. Natural aquifers are suitable for gas storage if water-bearing sedimentary rock is overlain with an impermeable cap rock but usually require more base gas than depleted oil fields. "Dry boring" methods employ the use of a temporary casing to seal the pile bore through water-bearing or unstable strata overlying suitable stable material. Upon reaching the design depth a reinforcing cage is introduced, concrete is placed in the bore and bought up to the required level. The casing is then withdrawn. "Wet" boring also employs a temporary casing through unstable ground and is used when the pile bore cannot be sealed against water ingress. Boring is then undertaken using a digging bucket to drill through the underlying soils to design depth. The reinforcing cage is lowered into the bore and concrete is placed by tremmie pipe, following which extraction of the temporary casing takes place. 1, record 26, English, - temporary%20casing

In the Sahara a rock stratum called the Continental Intercalary, which dates to the Cretaceous Period and which includes Nubian Sandstones, is the most important water-bearing layer. It extends over very large areas and reaches a thickness of more than 3, 000 feet; in Egypt and Algeria it provides artesian water. In The Sudan it sometimes lies directly on the Precambrian rock and contains underground water layers of local importance. Overlaying the Continental Intercalary but generally separated from it by a thick marine deposit is a layer called the Continental Terminal, which is the second-largest aquifer in this area. Both these layers contain "fossil" water _ that is to say, water that entered the layers when rainfall in and around the Sahara was much more abundant than today. Near the surface, aquifers are found in such recent deposits as alluvial deposits and sand dunes. 1, record 32, English, - Continental%20Terminal

A continental method of shaft sinking through sand which is water-bearing. The shaft is formed by boring in stages, increasing in sizes from the pilot hole of about 4 feet in diameter to the final excavation size. Once the shaft is bored, mud flush circulation continues while the lining is lowered. The lining consists of two steel cylinders, one within the other, and the annular space is filled with concrete. The cylinders are lowered into the shaft and 10-foot lengths are added and welded in position at the shaft top. 1, record 33, English, - Honigmann%20process

2, record 33, French, - proc%C3%A9d%C3%A9%20Honigmann
