Extinguishment. The term has, in the law, no fixed, uniform and universal meaning, but varies with the subject matter to which it is applied; but usually it connotes the end of a thing, precluding the existence of future life therein, and has been defined generally as meaning a complete wiping out, destruction, or annihilation, and not a mere suspension; the destruction or cancellation of a right, power, contract, or estate; a discharge by operation of law; a termination; and, more specifically, as the annihilation or extinction of a right by its being consolidated with a greater or more extensive right; the extinction of a charge or equity by its passing into the hands of the owner of the lands charged; and it has been sometimes used in the sense of payment. (extinguishment; extinction:) Both words are nouns corresponding to the verb "to extinguish". If there is differentiation, it is that extinguishment refers to the process, and extinction to the resultant state. Extinguishment means in law "the cessation or cancellation of some right or interest". (Garner, 1987, p. 235)

L'extinction d'une espèce est évidemment le terme d'une diminution plus ou moins rapide de la population de cette espèce. [...] c'est l'apparition de prédateurs ou de parasites nouveaux, au premier rang desquels se situe l'homme, qui constitue la menace la plus redoutable pour les espèces animales, ainsi que l'appauvrissement des ressources alimentaires de leur milieu.

Espèce en danger de disparition : espèce menacée d'extinction ou de disparition immédiates si les facteurs qui l'affectent continuent d'agir. II peut s'agir, entre autres, d'une espèce dont les effectifs ont été réduits à un niveau critique ou d'une espèce dont les habitats ont été détruits à tel point qu'elle est considérée comme en danger d'extinction immédiate.

OBS

Pour être rigoureux, les auteurs du Rapport du groupe de travail sur la biodiversité auraient dû maintenir la même opposition qu'on trouve dans «disparu» et «disparu d'un endroit donné» (en anglais «extinct» et «extirpated») pour rendre les notions symétriques de «disparition» et de «disparition d'un lieu donné» (en anglais «extinction» et «extirpation»). L'utilisation du terme français «extinction» vient briser cette symétrie.

OBS

Le terme «extinction» met l'accent sur le fait de cesser d'exister, de se reproduire, et correspond parfaitement à l'anglais «extinction», alors que le terme «disparition» met l'accent sur le fait de cesser de paraître, d'être visible. Cependant, en raison du contexte qui précède, on peut juger préférable d'employer «disparition» qui, dans le contexte de la sauvegarde des espèces, désigne aussi l'action de disparaître en cessant d'exister, et qui permet de mieux opposer les notions rendues par les termes anglais «extinction» et «extirpation».

Personne n'affirme que nous sommes à ce niveau d'extinction des espèces pour l'instant, mais nous disons que le niveau est dangereusement élevé.»

L'espèce peut être considérée comme l'unité de base en biostratigraphie et comme tout autre unité naturelle elle comporte une limite inférieure, une limite supérieure et une épaisseur. L'enchaînement vertical des espèces est ainsi caractérisée par : apparition = FAD «First Appearance Datum» (limite inférieure); durée de vie = extension verticale (épaisseur); disparition = LAD «Last Appearance Datum» (limite supérieure).
