The iESSP 2 Project is a "multi-country project" whose aim is to play a role in improving the health of West-african populations through efficient and sustainable reinforcement of endemoepidemic control mechanisms. Its overall objective is to provide technical and financial support to six countries of this region(Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, and Niger), strengthening their epidemiological surveillance capabilities. This project will take place over a period of four and a half years(2003-2007). As with preceding projects(ESSP/1991-1998, and iESSP/1998-2002), these countries will receive ongoing support to implement their HIV/AIDS integrated surveillance strategies. Project implementation will follow CCISD(Centre de coopération internationale en santé et développement) result-based indicators and CIDA(Canadian International Development Agency) orientation policies.

Grants reduce the probability of poor countries experiencing debt distress. As we are seeing in the cases of Niger and Ethiopia, countries’ debt levels remain at unsustainable levels, despite HIPC [Heavily Indebted Poor Countries] debt relief and additional "topping-up" assistance. Grants free up scarce public resources, which would otherwise have been used to pay off outstanding loan commitments. These resources can be used to fund the kind of productive investments... such as infrastructure improvements and agricultural programs, which contribute to economic growth and poverty reduction.

Le débit est le principal facteur régissant l'hydrochimie, principalement par le mécanisme de dilution. Le débit est aussi étroitement lié au transport de sédiments en suspension dans les rivières et les fleuves. En l'absence de mesures continues des débits, il est impossible de calculer les flux (le transport) de sédiments et de produits chimiques dans les cours d'eau. Un diagramme illustrant le débit en fonction du temps est appelé hydrogramme. The Lake Chad Basin Commission(LCBC) was established by a Convention and Statute signed on May 22, 1964, by Cameroon, Niger, and Nigeria, countries which border on Lake Chad. The Central African Republic joined the Commission as the fifth Member State during the 8th Summit of Heads of State held in Abuja, Nigeria in March 1994. The aims of the Commission are to regulate and control the utilization of water and other natural resources in the basin; to initiate, promote and coordinate natural resources development projects and research within the basin area; to examine complaints; and to promote the settlement of disputes, thereby promoting regional cooperation.

A flow forecasting system for the Niger river basin-contributing basin 1. 2 million km2-was funded by WMO. The network comprised 65 stations measuring river level and rainfall, linked by satellite to an international forecasting centre in Niamey and to national forecasting centres in each of the eight participating countries. Each of the stations also transmitted diagnostic data to facilitate preventative maintenance. The network was able to forecast flows up to 3 months in advance, making it a valuable tool for water management and agricultural production.

The pholidosaurid record for size is held by a huge specimen from Africa. P. Taquet of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris has turned up complete skulls and partial skeletons of the species Sarcosuchus imperator in a remarkable Lower Cretaceous fossil locality in the Saharan part of the Republic of Niger. This gavial-like monster was 11 meters long overall, and its narrow skull measures 1. 8 meters. It apparently lived in the rivers of this now-arid region.

Taquet's Niger fossil collection includes a very small mesosuchian that belongs to the genus Araripesuchus; the first member of the genus to be described was unearthed some two decades ago from a Lower Cretaceous formation in northeastern Brazil.
