The Earth’s only known natural satellite and next to the Sun the most conspicuous object in the sky, deriving its light from the Sun and reflecting it to the Earth.

The Moon revolves about the Earth from West to east in about 29. 53 days with reference to the Sun... or about 27. 32 days with reference to the stars; it has a mean diameter of 3475. 9 km... a mean distance from the Earth of about 384, 400 km... The Moon rotates once on its axis during each revolution in its orbit and therefore it always presents nearly the same face(41%) to the Earth; it has essentially no detectable atmosphere or water, and no life forms are believed to exist there.

In 1986 a civilian interorbital tug was studied to solve the specific application of transporting heavy satellites of 100 tonnes to geostationary orbit, launched by Energia. All of these designs seem to have been essentially similar; the figures given here are for the last study. The tug would have a propellant supply adequate for 16, 000 hours of operation and three years of reactor life.

Le remorqueur interorbital est destiné à aller chercher en orbite basse (environ 200 km d'altitude) des charges utiles mises en orbite par des fusées classiques, afin de les amener en orbite géostationnaire, à 36 000 km de la Terre. C'est un concept économique, puisqu'un même remorqueur peut être utilisé de façon répétée pour transférer plusieurs dizaines de charges utiles, alors qu'il faut aujourd'hui lancer avec chaque satellite géostationnaire un «étage de transfert» qui prend autant de poids au détriment de la charge utile. Le remorqueur interorbital peut être doté de propulseurs chimiques capables de développer des poussées importantes. Mais ces moteurs sont gourmands et, les réserves d'ergols étant limitées, le remorqueur ne pourra servir qu'un nombre restreint de fois.

The second and third Materials Science Research Rack (MSRR-2 and MSRR-3) configurations will be derived from ongoing science reference experiment and follow-on rack architectural and accommodation tradeoff studies. The rack designs will optimize flexibility for on-orbit maintenance and change out of key components. The MSRR-2 will be designed to accommodate the focus of currently planned and foreseeable materials science investigations through the use of a variety of on-orbit replaceable, investigation class EMs.

The initial MSRF concept is three Materials Science Research Racks(MSRR-1, MSRR-2, MSRR-3) which will developed for a phased deployment beginning on UF-3 in September, 2001. Concepts for the required Experiment Modules which satisfy the goals and objectives of the Materials Science program, are being developed. It is anticipated that the useful life of each rack will be from a minimum of five(5) to up to ten(10) years. The operational life of the Experiment Modules(EM) is planned for a minimum of five(5) years. The Ems will be designed to be serviceable and maintainable on orbit for their operational duration to satisfy the peer-selected scientific flight investigations. Flexibility is to be included in the design for ORU [Orbital Replaceable Unit] replacement of key components in order to extend useful life. The Experiment Modules for each rack will be designed to be "smart" furnaces with the avionics packages designed to support each investigation. The Experiment Modules for MSRR-2 and MSRR-3 will be designed with optimum flexibility to support on-orbit maintenance and change out of key components.

The ULC-Unpressurized Logistics Container... is an external equipment serving as means of transportation and cargo storage for the ISS [International Space Station]. It will have a total operation life of 10 years with intervals of no more than five years in orbit. The unpressurized cargo to be transported on the ULC will use an interface unit called CHIA [Cargo Handling Interface Assembly] whose function is to provide electrical and mechanical interfaces between the cargo and the ULC. Brazil will supply four flight units of this equipment.

Even today, a geostationary satellite, whose useful life has ended, must be abandoned in space. The experimental servicing satellite ESS applies robotics to resolve the problem of servicing a non-cooperative target in or near to a geostationary orbit, a region of space still out of reach to manned spaceflight. A three-month demonstration flight of ESS has been planned and all phases of its mission have been defined. These include the acquisition, inspection and servicing of an orbiting satellite through to parking it in a "graveyard" orbit. The project builds on the experience gained with the robotics technology experiment Rotex, flown on the D2 Mission.
