The inclination of a satellite, together with its orbital altitude and the period of its orbit, creates a track defined by an imaginary line connecting the satellite and the Earth's center. The intersection on the line with the Earth's surface is the subsatellite point. As the Earth turns on its axis and the satellite orbits overhead, a line is created by the satellite's apparent path over the ground(the series of subsatellite points connected). A geostationary satellite has an inclination of essentially zero, and, because its orbital period exactly matches the Earth's rotation, its ground track is reduced to an apparent stationary point on the equator. 5, fiche 4, Anglais, - ground%20track

... The Progress supply vehicle to the ISS [International Space Station] is an automated version of the Soyuz, and was developed to carry propellant and cargo to the Salyut and Mir space station. It will serve the same purpose for the ISS. Although the ISS has its own propulsion system, generally it is the Progress vehicle that will perform periodic reboost maneuvers to maintain the ISS orbital altitude. The Progress is approximately the same size as the Soyuz, but it has a slightly higher mass at launch of approximately 7150 kg. The Progress spacecraft docks automatically to the ISS, and the TORU [Teleoperated Control System-Manual Docking System on Zarya] system acts as a backup remote control docking system. Progress is composed of three modules : the Cargo Module, the Refueling Module, and the Instrument/Propulsion Module. A modified version of the Progress M, called the Progress M1, is planned for operation with the ISS. This version will have more propellant tanks for refueling, as the entire Refueling Module is devoted to fuel. Water will be carried in the Cargo Module. The Progress payload includes cargo in the pressurized Cargo Module and propellant in the Refueling Module. Excess propellant that is usually in the propulsion system tanks in the Instrumentation/Propulsion Module can also be used by the ISS. 10, fiche 6, Anglais, - Progress%20supply%20vehicle

The calculations for the ISS [International Space Station] quasi-steady acceleration environment can be compared to a set of formal design requirements which state that 50 percent of the ISPR [International Standard Payload Rack] locations within the U.S. Lab, Columbus and the JEM must have quasi-steady accelerations below 1 ug for periods of 30 continuous days a total of 6 times per year. The operation of the Station in Microgravity Mode is designed to produce these 30 day intervals. The quasi-steady acceleration vector has an additional directional stability requirement stating that the component perpendicular to the vector’s orbital average must be less than or equal to 0.2 [mu] g. To meet this requirement the Station’s attitude must be controlled during orbit so that it maintains a constant position relative to the LVLH [Local Vertical/Local Horizontal] axes. 2, fiche 7, Anglais, - quasi%2Dsteady%20acceleration%20environment
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The quasi-steady state acceleration level is determined primarily by the combined effects of atmospheric drag(due to the finite residual Earth's atmosphere at the orbital altitude of the ISS), and gravity gradient stabilisation of the ISS. Gravity gradient stabilisation uses the principle that a body in orbit around the Earth will tend to rotate about it's centre of mass, as each part of the body will tend to follow it's own orbit. It will normally oscillate about a mean orientation, but will eventually remain in a stable orientation with respect to the Earth. The normal orientation for the ISS is the Torque Equilibrium Attitude discussed earlier. The resultant combination of atmospheric drag, gravity gradient and other secondary effects produce a set of gravity contours(i. e., locations of equal gravity level) which define the quasi-steady state microgravity environment of the ISS. 3, fiche 7, Anglais, - quasi%2Dsteady%20acceleration%20environment
