Ply : a layer of felt in a built-up roof membrane system. A four-ply membrane system has four layers of felt.

The performance of the membrane depends, to a very large measure, on the method of laying. There is only one in general use in Canada, and it may be referred to as the shingle method.... It is simple to understand, and fast and easy to carry out. Half-lapping gives a two-ply, two-thirds lapping a three-ply, and three-quarters lapping a four-ply roofing membrane. It has the very serious disadvantage that any wrinkling of felts or lifting at the laps tends to provide a direct path to the supporting insulation or deck. This is why it is considered so essential with this method to achieve intimate contact between plies without wrinkles or fishmouths.

Le comportement d'une toiture multicouche dépend largement des méthodes utilisées pour sa mise en œuvre. Au Canada, on utilise généralement une seule méthode, qu'on pourrait appeler la méthode de chevauchement [...] Il est aisé de comprendre son principe qui est d'exécution rapide et simple. Un chevauchement par moitiés donne une toiture multicouche à deux couches, aux deux tiers il donne trois couches et aux trois quarts on obtient quatre couches. Ce système souffre d'un désavantage sérieux, car tout pli ou relèvement des lisières de feutre offre à l'eau une voie directe vers le subjectile. C'est pourquoi il est indispensable d'obtenir un contact intime entre les feutres et d'éviter tout pli ou godet.

Artificial support for mining purposes is only concerned with the immediate roof as nothing except large blocks of solid coal, or massive concrete, will support the main roof.... The sumo ring is called the dohyo and takes its name from the straw rice bag which mark out its different parts. The greater portion of each bale is firmly buried in the earth. The dohyo is 18 feet square and 2 feet high and is constructed of a special kind of clay. The hard surface is covered with a thin layer of sand. The bout is confined to an inner circle a little over 15 feet in diameter. Over the dohyo suspended from the ceiling by cables is a roof resembling a Shinto shrine with four giant tassels hanging from each corner to signify the seasons of the year.

Most vinyl roofing membranes are sealed using hot air, which can be compared to welding metal. The process joins two rolls of membranes at the overlap areas(without using another dissimilar material) to create one monolithic layer that covers the entire roof. The heat-welded, permanently fused seams on vinyl roofing membrane form a watertight seal, and their peel strength can be critical to the roof system's long-term performance against wind forces.

ROOF technology allows old roof membrane to be renewed without removal. ROOF technology is based upon a thermochemical treatment of bitumen roof coating. With heat applied to a section of roof coating bitumen and bituminiferous mastics start melting. Imbued with own bitumen, roof coating gains improved waterproofing capabilities. Once cooled such coating becomes a tough monolithic layer, smooth and watertight.

Hot-applied rubberized asphalts consist of proprietary blends of asphalt, mineral fillers, elastomers (natural, synthetic, or a blend of both), virgin or reclaimed oil and a thermoplastic resin. It is applied hot in such a manner as to form an impermeable monolithic membrane over the surface to be waterproofed, which may be concrete, gypsum board or wood. Improved versions of this type of system consist of two coats of rubberized asphalt with a polyester mat in between, called the fully reinforced or two-ply system.

After the roof is thoroughly cleaned, the base layer of Roof Guard elastomeric coating is spray applied to the roof surface at an approximate rate of 6 gallons per 100 sq ft. Into the wet elastomeric coating a ply of tietex polyester fabric is embedded. The whole roof and all flashings are laid up in the same fashion forming a monolithic, flexible and extremely strong membrane.

If a vapor retarder is to be used with this construction, it should be placed on top of a minimal base layer of mechanically attached insulation. When snow and ice melt, trapped water can infiltrate to damage the roof deck and interior. Ice Guard [trademark] is installed under shingled roofing to prevent water damage from ice dams. ... Applied under the shingles, Ice Guard forms a long-lasting waterproof barrier, unlike normal shingle underlayment. Ice Guard is warranted to protect against water leakage, where it has been applied, for the warranted life of the new shingled roof.

Icicles and ice dams. An adhered waterproof membrane is needed under steep roofing such as shingles at valleys, around skylights and other large penetrations, and along eaves to avoid leaks when icings back up water in these places.

An ice dam is a build up of ice and water that works its way under shingles/shakes. When snow/ice from the peak melts(caused by warm spots in the attic or the sun), water slowly runs down the roof.... Most roofs have a single layer of underlayment(i. e. builder's felt) that protects against moisture penetration and in many northern states an extra waterproofing membrane is required by building codes.

The batch-in-bin drying process involves using a bin as a batch dryer. A 3 to 4-foot deep layer of grain is placed in the bin and the fan and heater started. Typical drying air temperatures are 120 to 160F with airflow rates of 8 to 15 cfm/bushel. Drying begins at the floor and progresses upward. Grain at the floor of the bin becomes excessively dry while the top layer of the batch remains fairly wet. The grain is cooled in the bin after it is dried. Some batch-in-bin dryers hold the grain being dried in a layer near the roof. After the grain is dried it is dropped to the bin floor where it is cooled. As the grain is moved from the bin, the grain is mixed, and the average moisture content going into final storage should be low enough that mold growth will not be a problem.
