Department of Education was established by assent on May 13, 1950 (prior to this time known as the Bureau of Education). Name changed August 11, 1970 to Department of Education and Youth, and reverted to Department of Education on April 1, 1973. Name changed in 1994 to Department of Education and Training.

The Department of Education is a dynamic organization charged with the responsibility for providing the enabling structures for the education of over 81,000 students in the K-12 system, as well as the post-secondary system. The department also encourages and promotes lifelong learning for all of the citizens of Newfoundland and Labrador. The mandate of the Department of Education is built around the following mission statement: To provide an affordable, high quality education to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians so that they are able to acquire - through lifelong learning - the knowledge, skills and values necessary for personal growth and the development of society.

Reverted November 24, 1979 to Ministry of Education. Name changed November 1991 to Ministry of Education and Ministry Responsible for Multiculturalism and Human Rights at the same time as it absorbed the multiculturalism and immigration functions of the former Ministry of Provincial Secretary and Ministry Responsible for Multiculturalism and Immigration; reverted September 1993 from Ministry of Education and Ministry Responsible for Multiculturalism and Human Rights to Ministry of Education. Name changed spring 1996 to Ministry of Education, Skills and Training at the same time as it absorbed the skills and training functions of the former Ministry of Skills, Training and Labour.

The structure of the Ministry was changed in 1996 when it became the Ministry of Education, Skills and Training, and again in 1998 when it became the Ministry of Advanced Education, Training and Technology.
