On peut les délimiter astronomiquement par les passages successifs du soleil aux solstices et aux équinoxes. Cette division ne convient pas à toutes les contrées, et l'étude des divers climats permet de distinguer pour chacun des lieux en particulier des caractères, des époques, des durées et même un nombre différent de saisons au cours de l'année.
