The main characteristic of the desert is its aridity. Aridity is calculable and those navigating deserts are advised to understand the term so that the element of risk can be appraised and managed with safety. CW Thornthwaite's aridity index shows water deficiency relative to water need for a given area. 1, fiche 3, Anglais, - CW%20Thornthwaite%27s%20aridity%20index

Thornthwaite [...] Le coefficient d’aridité de Gorczynski [...] L’indice d’aridité de Dubief [...] L’indice climatique de potentialité agricole de Turc [...] 1, fiche 3, Français, - indice%20d%27aridit%C3%A9%20de%20C%2EW%2E%20Thornthwaite

A great group of soils in the Chernozemic order. The soils occur in the cool to cold subhumid grassland and parkland regions. They have a very dark surface (Ah or Ap) horizon and ordinarily a brownish B (Bm, Btj, or Bt) horizon, which may be absent, over a highly base-saturated, usually calcareous C horizon. 1, fiche 4, Anglais, - black
