1, fiche 29, Espagnol, - ingravidez

For launches into Earth orbit the main constraints are the desired orbit, the point of injection into that orbit, and the possibility of a collision with other orbiting spacecraft or orbital debris. For launches to interplanetary trajectories, the time of launch is constrained by the relative positions of the planets, at the time of both launch and encounter(i. e. the spacecraft must be aimed at a point in space that the planet will have reached by the time of encounter). A spacecraft launched outside the launch window would require more propellant and/or more time to reach its target. 2, fiche 45, Anglais, - launch%20window

For the purpose of this discussion, "weaponization" is limited to destructive mechanisms and do not include observation, communications or other non-destructive activities, even if military in nature. The weaponization of space could take a variety of forms. First, there is the threat from above posed by space strike or orbital bombardment weapon systems. Orbital bombardment weapons are weapon systems that operate in space for one or more orbits and strike at land, sea or air targets. Secondly, there are anti-satellite(ASAT) weapon systems used to permanently degrade, damage or destroy enemy satellites. Lastly, there are ballistic missile defence(BMD) weapon systems. Some variants of BMD systems may be based in outer space and be used to destroy incoming ballistic missiles through the boost and mid-course phases of their flight. Putative weapons, such as orbiting space-based lasers based on "exotic" technologies or variants of conventionally-armed and kinetic energy "kill-mechanism" missile interceptors may be capable of performing all three functions. 3, fiche 46, Anglais, - weapanization%20of%20space

Mission : Space surveillance is a critical part of USSPACECOM's mission and involves detecting, tracking, cataloging and identifying man-made objects orbiting Earth, i. e. active/inactive satellites, spent rocket bodies, or fragmentation debris. Space surveillance accomplishes the following : Predict when and where a decaying space object will re-enter the Earth's atmosphere; Prevent a returning space object, which to radar looks like a missile, from triggering a false alarm in missile-attack warning sensors of the U. S. and other countries; Chart the present position of space objects and plot their anticipated orbital paths; Detect new man-made objects in space; Produce a running catalog of man-made space objects; Determine which country owns a re-entering space object; Inform NASA whether or not objects may interfere with the space shuttle and Russian Mir space station orbits. 2, fiche 47, Anglais, - Space%20Surveillance%20Network

The American Space Agency Nasa... is putting several million dollars into the project under its advanced concepts programme. At the heart of a space elevator would be a cable reaching up as far as 100, 000km from the surface of the Earth. The earthbound end would be tethered to a base station, probably somewhere in the middle of the Pacific ocean. The other end would be attached to an orbiting object in space acting as a counterweight, the momentum of which would keep the cable taut and allow vehicles to climb up and down it. A space elevator would make rockets redundant by granting cheaper access to space. At about a third of the way along the cable-36, 000 km from Earth-objects take a day to complete a full orbit. If the cable's centre of gravity remained at this height, the cable would remain vertical, as satellites placed at this height are geostationary, effectively hovering over the same spot on the ground. To build a space elevator such a geostationary satellite would be placed into orbit carrying the coiled-up cable. One weighted end of the cable would then be dropped back towards Earth, while the other would be unreeled off into space. Mechanical lifters could then climb up the cable from the ground, ferrying up satellites, space probes and eventually tourists. The biggest technical obstacle is finding a material strong but light enough to make the cable; this is where the carbon nanotubes come in. These are microscopically thin tubes of carbon that are as strong as diamonds but flexible enough to turn into fibre. In theory, a nanotube ribbon about one metre wide and as thin as paper could support a space elevator. 2, fiche 51, Anglais, - space%20elevator

The angular momentum of a tumbling orbiting satellite is changed to reduce the spinning of the spacecraft such that the spacecraft can operate in an essentially stabilized condition. The change in spin rate is accomplished by the development of a magnetic torque by commutation of magnetic air coils in response to Earth sensor signals controlled by spacecraft logic. The coils are disposed to produce magnetic dipoles transverse to the satellite spin axis such that by interacting with the Earth's magnetic field a torque is developed in a direction opposite the spin vector. The logic selects the proper magnetic dipole based upon data from sensors detecting the presence of the Earth for the development of the desired magnetic torque. 5, fiche 57, Anglais, - magnetotorquer

Circular orbit. When it was first discovered that planets orbit the Sun, it was assumed that they moved in perfect circles. This assumption was not correct. We know now that orbiting objects follow an oval, or elliptical, path. While a circle is a special kind of ellipse, most orbiting bodies are at least a little bit "out or round", or eccentric. Most planets revolve in nearly circular paths, which is why the assumption that orbits were circular was believed for so long. Johannes Kepler was the first astronomer to show that planets and other orbiting bodies revolve in an ellipse. Many years after Kepler died, the planet Pluto was discovered. Pluto's orbit is so eccentric that it actually crosses Neptune's... 2, fiche 63, Anglais, - circular%20orbit

The ROCSAT3/COSMIC(Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate) mission consists of a constellation of 6 low-earth orbiting satellites. In conducting the atmospheric limb sounding using the GPS radio occultation technique(which is the main objective of the mission), the satellite orbits are precisely determined at any given moment by GPS "high-low" satellite-to-satellite tracking. These precise orbit determination(POD) data contain useful information about the Earth's gravitational field and its time variations, for both geophysical and climate-related research. 4, fiche 70, Anglais, - satellite%2Dto%2Dsatellite%20tracking

Even today, a geostationary satellite, whose useful life has ended, must be abandoned in space. The experimental servicing satellite ESS applies robotics to resolve the problem of servicing a non-cooperative target in or near to a geostationary orbit, a region of space still out of reach to manned spaceflight. A three-month demonstration flight of ESS has been planned and all phases of its mission have been defined. These include the acquisition, inspection and servicing of an orbiting satellite through to parking it in a "graveyard" orbit. The project builds on the experience gained with the robotics technology experiment Rotex, flown on the D2 Mission. 2, fiche 71, Anglais, - robotics%20technology%20experiment

STEP : Satellite Test of the Equivalence Principle. Worden and Everitt have proposed to carry out an improved version of Galileo's Leaning Tower of Pisa experiment, by placing masses of different composition inside a satellite orbiting the Earth to obtain a long duration of free fall. Very high positional sensitivity can be achieved by cooling the experiment to 1. 8 K and using SQUIDs to detect in current changes in magnetic pickup coils. The test masses of different materials and the position measuring equipment are placed inside the satellite and micro Newton thrusters are used to cancel the small accelerations of the satellite due to air drag, radiation pressure and the solar wind which could couple to masses. 2, fiche 73, Anglais, - satellite%20test%20of%20the%20equivalence%20principle

Orbiting Astronomical Observatory(OAO), series of four orbiting observatories launched between 1966 and 1972 by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) to provide astronomical data in the ultraviolet and X-ray wavelengths filtered out by the earth's atmosphere. Only two of the four launches were successful, however. OAO-2, launched in 1978, which carried two large telescopes in addition to a cluster of four ultraviolet telescopes, four photoelectric telescopes, and a number of spectrometers and other devices, weighed 4, 200 lb(1, 900 kg) and was the heaviest satellite orbited to that time. Working primarily with ultraviolet radiation, it was able to photograph very young stars. OAO-3, which was also called Copernicus, was launched in 1972. Carrying what was at that time the largest telescope ever orbited and three smaller X-ray telescopes, OAO-3 was primarily used in the study of ultraviolet radiation from interstellar gas and dust and from stars near the edges of the Milky Way. 2, fiche 77, Anglais, - Orbiting%20Astronomical%20Observatory

Orbiting Geophysical Observatory(OGO), series of six orbiting observatories launched between 1964 and 1969 by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) to study the earth's atmosphere, ionosphere, and magnetosphere and the solar wind. In order to provide global coverage, three of the satellites(OGO-2, OGO-4, and OGO-6) were launched into low polar orbits while the other three(OGO-1, OGO-3, and OGO-5) were placed in eccentric orbits ranging out as far as almost 92, 830 mi(150, 000 km). Each observatory carried 20-25 instruments, including cosmic ray detectors, counters, and telescopes, ionization chambers, Geiger counters, magnetometers, spectrometers, photometers, micrometeoroid detectors, and ion and electron traps. Among the significant achievements of the OGO program were the first observations of daytime auroras and of the protons responsible for the ring of electric current that surrounds the earth during magnetic storms, the collection of data showing the interaction of the solar wind with the earth's magnetosphere, and the verification of the existence of the plasmapause, the inner boundary of the region of trapped radiation in the magnetosphere. 2, fiche 79, Anglais, - Orbiting%20Geophysical%20Observatory

The Polar Orbiting Earth Observation Mission(Poem-1), which is a large satellite for the monitoring of the environment scheduled to be launched in 2000. The objective of the Polar Orbiting Earth Observation(Poem-1) is to develop and build a new satellite platform to accommodate Earth Observation Instruments and supply them with the necessary energy. It is important to build a satellite platform because the lifetime of a satellite is limited and because the continuity of measurements, which is of primary importance to monitor the evolution of our environment and potential climate change, can be ensured only by flying a succession of satellites. 1, fiche 80, Anglais, - Polar%20Orbiting%20Earth%20Observation%20Mission

The GPS EOW rollover occurs every 1,024 weeks -- about once every 20 years. The GPS system calculates time by counting the number of weeks since January 6, 1980 -- up to a maximum of 1,023 weeks. At midnight between August 21-22, 1999, the GPS week "counter" will roll back to zero weeks. DOD says this will not create problems for the GPS satellites or DOD’s GPS ground control center, but it could present a problem for consumers who use older GPS receivers and related applications. That’s because after August 21, 1999, receivers could process satellite data incorrectly and display inaccurate information. 6, fiche 82, Anglais, - end%2Dof%2Dweek%20rollover

Users of the Global Positioning System (GPS) should note that GPS does not have a Y2K problem. However, a clock overflow problem, called the "Z-count roll-over" does exist and is sometimes erroneously labeled as a Y2K problem. Even in a gravity gradient attitude, accelerations caused by crew movements, equipment operations, and occasional thruster firings can disrupt the quiescent low-gravity environment and may affect microgravity science experiments. Accelerations at particular frequencies may interrupt one type of experiment but have no effect on others. These accelerations are measured at fractions of Earth’s gravity; for instance, 10~ g is equal to 1/100,000 of the gravity on Earth. 3, fiche 91, Anglais, - microgravity%20environment

Returning to the Earth involves the problem of decreasing the spacecraft's great speed. To do this, an orbiting spacecraft uses small rockets to redirect its flight path into the upper atmosphere. This action is called de-orbit. A spacecraft returning to the Earth from the moon or from another planet also aims its path to skim the upper atmosphere. Air resistance then provides the rest of the necessary deceleration(speed reduction). 1, fiche 93, Anglais, - air%20resistance

The planets of our Solar System formed due to two properties of interstellar clouds : rotation and turbulence. When clouds fragment during contraction, individual fragments turn this way and that, each having inherited the angular momentum(spin) of one or a few discrete whorls or eddies in the original clouds. Each cloud fragment(a potential star) would have rotated faster and faster as it contracted, owing to the physical necessity of conserving its angular momentum-much as a skater spins up when he/she folds in her/his arms. Fragments with low angular momentum form the core and fragments with high angular momentum populate a flattened disk orbiting the core, with a shape similar to many galaxies. Often the core itself is fragmented, leading to binary and multiple star systems. 1, fiche 95, Anglais, - cloud%20fragment
