Sometimes when the Moon orbits Earth, it moves between the Sun and Earth. When this happens, the Moon blocks [some or all of] the light of the Sun from reaching Earth. This causes an eclipse of the Sun, or solar eclipse. During a solar eclipse, the Moon casts a shadow onto Earth. 3, fiche 1, Anglais, - solar%20eclipse

The argument of pericenter, for example, is defined as follows. There is a line through space which is fixed by convention as a reference. If one body orbits another(for instance the Moon orbiting around the Earth) the argument of pericenter associated with this orbit is the angle in the plane of the orbit between the reference line and the closest point of the orbit to the focus. Oculoplastic surgery is specialised plastic surgery around the eyelids and face. It is also called oculo-facial surgery as the eyelids are continuous with the forehead, cheeks and deals with the related tear system(lacrimal) and orbits(deeper structures surrounding the eyeball). Surgery is primarily for abnormalities of the eyelids and their surrounding tissues, including their position and contour, in order to maintain, restore or improve function and appearance. This includes eyelid cysts and tumours, malpositions such as drooping eyelids(ptosis), staring eyes in thyroid eye disease, watering eyes and artificial(prosthetic) eyes. 3, fiche 22, Anglais, - oculoplastic%20surgery

The System uses a constellation of satellites placed in orbit at an altitude of 20, 178 km. They complete their circular orbits in half a sidereal day, that is 11 hr 57 min. These satellites emit two sets of signals on 1, 227MHz [megahertz] and 1, 575 MHz in the L-band. These signals carry the transmitting satellites’ identification and position, as well as the time and other information. The airborne equipment is entirely passive. It consists of a receiver whose position is determined by measuring its distance from four of the system's satellites. 9, fiche 23, Anglais, - Navigation%20Satellite%20Timing%20and%20Ranging%20Global%20Positioning%20System

For orbits tilted... and having altitudes of a few hundred miles, this oddity, called the South Atlantic Anomaly(SAA) becomes important, because spacecraft in those orbits periodically pass through that zone of reduced natural shielding and thus spend a few minutes during each passage exposed to higher particle flux than outside it. 2, fiche 24, Anglais, - South%20Atlantic%20anomaly

1, fiche 24, Espagnol, - anomal%C3%ADa%20del%20Atl%C3%A1ntico%20Sur

As a moon orbits around a giant planet, tidal forces can cause its crust to flex back and forth, creating friction that heats the moon from within. Once the thermal velocity of electrons exceeds their "escape velocity" from atoms, the electrons break loose from their orbits and roam free. Thus plasma glows. 2, fiche 36, Anglais, - free%20electron

As an integral part of worldwide search and rescue, NOAA [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration] operates the Search & Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking(SARSAT) System to locate those in distress almost anywhere in the world at anytime and in most conditions. The SARSAT system uses NOAA satellites in low-earth and geostationary orbits to detect and locate aviators, mariners, and land-based users in distress. The satellites relay distress signals from emergency beacons to a network of ground stations and ultimately to the U. S. Mission Control Center(USMCC) in Suitland, Maryland. The USMCC processes the distress signal and alerts the appropriate search and rescue authorities to who is in distress and, more importantly, where they are located. 4, fiche 48, Anglais, - search%20and%20rescue%20satellite%20aided%20tracking%20system

The Lagrangian points... are the five positions in an orbital configuration where a small object affected only by gravity can theoretically be stationary relative to two larger objects(such as a satellite with respect to the Earth and Moon). The Lagrange points mark positions where the combined gravitational pull of the two large masses provides precisely the centripetal force required to rotate with them. They are analogous to geosynchronous orbits in that they allow an object to be in a "fixed" position in space rather than an orbit in which its relative position changes continuously. 3, fiche 53, Anglais, - halo%20orbit

The inclination of a satellite, together with its orbital altitude and the period of its orbit, creates a track defined by an imaginary line connecting the satellite and the Earth's center. The intersection on the line with the Earth's surface is the subsatellite point. As the Earth turns on its axis and the satellite orbits overhead, a line is created by the satellite's apparent path over the ground(the series of subsatellite points connected). A geostationary satellite has an inclination of essentially zero, and, because its orbital period exactly matches the Earth's rotation, its ground track is reduced to an apparent stationary point on the equator. 5, fiche 55, Anglais, - ground%20track

For the purpose of this discussion, "weaponization" is limited to destructive mechanisms and do not include observation, communications or other non-destructive activities, even if military in nature. The weaponization of space could take a variety of forms. First, there is the threat from above posed by space strike or orbital bombardment weapon systems. Orbital bombardment weapons are weapon systems that operate in space for one or more orbits and strike at land, sea or air targets. Secondly, there are anti-satellite(ASAT) weapon systems used to permanently degrade, damage or destroy enemy satellites. Lastly, there are ballistic missile defence(BMD) weapon systems. Some variants of BMD systems may be based in outer space and be used to destroy incoming ballistic missiles through the boost and mid-course phases of their flight. Putative weapons, such as orbiting space-based lasers based on "exotic" technologies or variants of conventionally-armed and kinetic energy "kill-mechanism" missile interceptors may be capable of performing all three functions. 3, fiche 63, Anglais, - weapanization%20of%20space

Mission : Space surveillance is a critical part of USSPACECOM's mission and involves detecting, tracking, cataloging and identifying man-made objects orbiting Earth, i. e. active/inactive satellites, spent rocket bodies, or fragmentation debris. Space surveillance accomplishes the following : Predict when and where a decaying space object will re-enter the Earth's atmosphere; Prevent a returning space object, which to radar looks like a missile, from triggering a false alarm in missile-attack warning sensors of the U. S. and other countries; Chart the present position of space objects and plot their anticipated orbital paths; Detect new man-made objects in space; Produce a running catalog of man-made space objects; Determine which country owns a re-entering space object; Inform NASA whether or not objects may interfere with the space shuttle and Russian Mir space station orbits. 2, fiche 64, Anglais, - Space%20Surveillance%20Network

Stabilisation. This stage will start automatically upon detection of the spacecraft separation from the launch vehicle. Spacecraft initialisation consists of switching on sensors : GPS, Magnetometer, Gyro and Sun Sensor. At launcher release, the spacecraft will autonomously recognise its angular rate, damp it and acquire controlled attitude. Upon success of de-spin and first sun acquisition, RADARSAT-2 will start to acquire a coarse stable 3-axes attitude. This process should take 2-3 orbits. 2, fiche 68, Anglais, - stabilisation

Stabilisation. Satellite navigation.... which has been developed over the last thirty years or so, essentially for military purposes originally, enables anyone with a receiver capable of picking up signals emitted by a constellation of satellites to instantly determine their position in time and space very accurately. The operating principle is simple : the satellites in the constellation are fitted with an atomic clock measuring time very accurately. The satellites emit personalised signals indicating the precise time the signal leaves the satellite. The ground receiver, incorporated for example into a mobile phone, has in its memory the precise details of the orbits of all the satellites in the constellation. By reading the incoming signal, it can thus recognise the particular satellite, determine the time taken by the signal to arrive and calculate the distance from the satellite. Once the ground receiver receives the signals from at least four satellites simultaneously, it can calculate the exact position. 2, fiche 69, Anglais, - satellite%20navigation

Solar Orbital Transfer Vehicle(SOTV) GA is a major subcontractor to Boeing on the SOTV, a space vehicle that can efficiently transport space payloads from Low Earth Orbits(LEO) to Geosynchronous Orbits(GEO) while providing kilowatts of electrical power. A solar concentrator heats a graphite receiver up to temperatures of 2400 K. Heat from the graphite receiver is used to heat thermionic converters, which produce efficient, reliable electrical power. Alternately, hydrogen can be passed through passages within the graphite receiver, expanded out a nozzle and used to produce highly efficient propulsion.

For the Earth, the plasmapause is described as the equipotential boundary between a region dominated by the corotational electric field, where there are closed particle orbits, and a region dominated by a convective dawn-dusk electric field, where there are no closed orbits. However, the existence of such a static boundary for the dynamic magnetospheres of Uranus and Neptune has been called into question, by two dimensional guiding center calculations for particles in the magnetic equatorial plane. 3, fiche 73, Anglais, - plasmapause

Atomic structure and properties ... A more meaningful definition of "atom" can be made in terms of the internal structure, which has been well understood at least since 1927. In these terms the atom is the unit of matter that contains a small, dense, positively charged nucleus surrounded by sufficient negative electrons to make the whole electrically neutral. Structure. All atoms are about the same size, and this fact is a clue to the nature of their structure. The atomic diameter is about 2 X 10[superscript] -8 cm (2 hundred-millionths of a centimeter). Since this is only 1/1000 of the wavelength of visible light, atoms cannot be seen in the ordinary sense, even with microscope. 3, fiche 77, Anglais, - atomic%20structure

Circular orbit. When it was first discovered that planets orbit the Sun, it was assumed that they moved in perfect circles. This assumption was not correct. We know now that orbiting objects follow an oval, or elliptical, path. While a circle is a special kind of ellipse, most orbiting bodies are at least a little bit "out or round", or eccentric. Most planets revolve in nearly circular paths, which is why the assumption that orbits were circular was believed for so long. Johannes Kepler was the first astronomer to show that planets and other orbiting bodies revolve in an ellipse. Many years after Kepler died, the planet Pluto was discovered. Pluto's orbit is so eccentric that it actually crosses Neptune's... 2, fiche 78, Anglais, - circular%20orbit

The ROCSAT3/COSMIC(Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate) mission consists of a constellation of 6 low-earth orbiting satellites. In conducting the atmospheric limb sounding using the GPS radio occultation technique(which is the main objective of the mission), the satellite orbits are precisely determined at any given moment by GPS "high-low" satellite-to-satellite tracking. These precise orbit determination(POD) data contain useful information about the Earth's gravitational field and its time variations, for both geophysical and climate-related research. 4, fiche 87, Anglais, - satellite%2Dto%2Dsatellite%20tracking

Orbiting Geophysical Observatory(OGO), series of six orbiting observatories launched between 1964 and 1969 by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) to study the earth's atmosphere, ionosphere, and magnetosphere and the solar wind. In order to provide global coverage, three of the satellites(OGO-2, OGO-4, and OGO-6) were launched into low polar orbits while the other three(OGO-1, OGO-3, and OGO-5) were placed in eccentric orbits ranging out as far as almost 92, 830 mi(150, 000 km). Each observatory carried 20-25 instruments, including cosmic ray detectors, counters, and telescopes, ionization chambers, Geiger counters, magnetometers, spectrometers, photometers, micrometeoroid detectors, and ion and electron traps. Among the significant achievements of the OGO program were the first observations of daytime auroras and of the protons responsible for the ring of electric current that surrounds the earth during magnetic storms, the collection of data showing the interaction of the solar wind with the earth's magnetosphere, and the verification of the existence of the plasmapause, the inner boundary of the region of trapped radiation in the magnetosphere. 2, fiche 94, Anglais, - Orbiting%20Geophysical%20Observatory

Temporal resolution refers to how often the same geographic area is revisited by a sensor. Temporal resolution is governed by the orbital characteristics of the satellite vehicle. A sun-synchronous orbit means that the satellite travels on multiple pole to pole orbits coordinated with the circle of illumination(hemisphere of the Sun's incident light), such that the satellite collects at approximately the same time of day at every point on the Earth for every orbit. 2, fiche 100, Anglais, - temporal%20resolution
