Edmonton, Edmontonian, Gateway to the North

A native or resident of Alberta’s capital city is called an Edmontonian. While the demonym Edmontonian is encountered in newspapers and magazines, it is often replaced in more formal writing by native, resident or inhabitant of Edmonton, or some similar phrase.

  • Edmontonian (or Edmonton native) Emily Murphy was one of the Famous Five.
  • Many residents of Edmonton (or Edmonton residents) enjoy canoeing on the North Saskatchewan River.

Edmonton is commonly used as a modifier, and Edmontonian is also encountered occasionally.

  • The Edmonton Oilers, the city’s NHL team, won their first Stanley Cup in 1984.
  • With its hundreds of stores and its other exciting features, the mall is an important Edmontonian tourist attraction.

Note that the term Edmontonian is also used in reference to a geologic age.

  • The Edmontonian age is part of the late Cretaceous era.

Gateway to the North is a popular nickname for the city of Edmonton.

  • Edmonton is known as “the Gateway to the North” and as one of Canada’s sunniest cities.
