abeyance, hold in abeyance

To write plainly, use suspend instead of the needlessly legalistic hold in abeyance. Other possibilities include put on hold or set aside.

  • Legalistic: The project was held in abeyance until the problems were resolved.
  • Plain: The project was suspended until the problems were resolved.
