To write plainly, avoid the legalistic hereinafter. Possible alternatives include from this point on or subsequently.

  • Legalistic: Mr. Jones will hereinafter be referred to as the defendant.
  • Plain: From this point on, Mr. Jones will be referred to as the defendant.

In many instances, the best solution is simply to omit the word hereinafter.

  • Legalistic: The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (hereinafter DFO) agrees to support the lighthouse restoration program.
  • Plain: The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) agrees to support the lighthouse restoration program.
