To look after someone or something refers to the provision of care, usually in the absence of the parent, owner or person responsible.

  • Franz spent Sunday looking after his sister Margot’s baby while Margot was riding in the rodeo.
  • Please look after my bike while I step into the Dairy Queen for some ice cream.
  • We looked after Shelly’s house, watered his plants, and fed his three cats whenever he was away.
