lase, laser

Laser began as an acronym for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.” As its applications have increased in number, laser has become a standard word.

Laser can be used as a noun or as an adjective.

  • Lasers are used extensively in optical surgery.
  • Our four-year-old laser printer is beginning to make strange noises.
  • Laser disc players have made high-quality home video a reality.

The verb lase has come into use more recently.

  • Your doctor can lase unsightly moles, warts and tattoos.
