To cite something is to mention it or repeat it as proof of what is being said.

  • The lawyer cited an important precedent during his defence.

To cite a person is to summon him or her before a court of law.

  • Albert was cited for drunk and disorderly conduct.

To quote is to repeat something verbatim.

  • The candidate was often quoted after the debate.
