speculate about, speculate in, speculate on, speculate upon

The verb speculate is typically followed by the prepositions about, on or upon. In finance, one speculates in land, gold, commodities or stocks but one speculates on the stock market.

  • With a downturn in the American economy, many are speculating about how severely the Canadian dollar will be affected.
  • The attorney refused to speculate upon (or on) the outcome of the trial.
  • Petra enjoys speculating in real estate.
  • My broker advised me to speculate on the stock market with only the money I could afford to lose.
