sudden impulse, impulse

Redundancies are words that unnecessarily repeat information. Because an impulse is a spontaneous act, the modifier sudden in the familiar expression sudden impulse is redundant.

  • Francine had an impulse (not a sudden impulse) to toss the computer out the window and take the rest of the day off.
