valid, invalid

Valid means “factual,” “relevant,” “appropriate” or “legally binding.”

  • Raymond’s suggestions were valid because they were based on sound reasoning.
  • The university deemed serious illness a valid reason for not writing a final exam.
  • That 1-800 telephone number is not valid outside Canada.
  • The car warranty is valid for two years or 100,000 kilometres.

The opposite of valid is invalid (pronounced in-VA-lid).

  • Will they accept an invalid (expired) passport as identification?

A person who is chronically weak or sick is an invalid (pronounced IN-vuh-lid).

  • The clinic now provides round-the-clock care for invalids.
