lieutenant-governor, Lt.-Gov., His/Her Honour, Honourable

Capitalize lieutenant-governor when it is directly followed by the person’s name; however, this title is not in uppercase when referring to a role rather than a person. Plural: lieutenant-governors. The abbreviation Lt.-Gov., which should not be used in formal documents, is written with periods, capitals and a hyphen.

The lieutenant-governor of a province has the title Honourable for life; the courtesy title His/Her Honour is used only while in office.

  • Ontario Lieutenant-Governor Hilary Weston is the second woman to occupy the position.
  • As lieutenant-governor, the Honourable David Lam acted as the representative of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in British Columbia.
  • Some lieutenant-governors have left their mark on Canadian history, while others have faded away.
